Bilbao, on January 27, 2021. Alex Txikon and his team are already sleeping in C1 (approximately 5,800 meters). This was how he gave the news to base camp crew: “We have needed 4 hours to get here and we have made a huge effort because we needed to carry a lot of material. We climbed heavily loaded. I am in the tent with Cheppal. The other ones sleep in separate tents. It’s been crazy to carry everything and it’s so cold… We are 20 degrees below zero but we are feeling well and very excited. If the weather is with us, we could continue going up next days ”.
But first they will need to overcome a big obstacle. A “huge, ugly and complicated crack” that separates C1 from C2 (they will place it at approximately 6,500 meters). “We have 3 ladders but we will need more to pass the crack,” he admitted over the radio. Some expedition members now following closely from base camp will reach them. The weather looks favorable for the moment. “We have less wind than we thought so we advanced. Let’s see if the weather will keep like that next hours. Today we will spend the night here and as dawn breaks we will go up again to try to equip up to C2 ”.
The stairs won’t be the only they will need. “Eneko (his great friend and cook on the expedition), please, let’s see if you can bring us some gas cartridges, big ones, and some batteries for our radios. That would be very good, ”Alex demanded before cutting off the communication and going to sleep. Tomorrow they will have a tough day but they face it with great enthusiasm. “This is what we have come to, right?” He asked, laughing to his interlocutors at base camp.
